Regrettably the Algarve has its share of crime as do all holiday destinations. Avoid ruining your holiday by being a victim and make sure you lock up when leaving your accommodation, whether its an hotel or ( even more so ) a private villa. Those aluminium shutters that are fitted in almost all places are a good deterrent. Avoid leaving any personal items in view or unattended. Just like at home don't tempt would-be thieves. The police are pretty hot on this, so don't be offended if they point out an oversight to you.

Resort Complexes

Luz has one huge complex which is the Ocean Club. It spreads throughout the town. It is divided up into various 'villages' which take bookings and function as individual businesses whilst sharing the facilities of all parts. This seems to work well and the layout is not as intrusive as you would think.

Hotels

Hotel Tips :  Don't use the Telephones in your room. They are terribly expensive. However, using the Hotel's own Fax machine is normally cheaper than the Post Office. Avoid using your mobile phone except for emergencies. Unless you are on some sort of special tariff it is still very expensive to make and receive calls.

Inns (Estalegum) and Guest Houses ( Vivenda )

Inns (Estalegum), Pensions and Guest Houses (Vivenda) are quite plentiful in the Algarve but are not the easiest to locate. They are by far the cheapest form of accommodation especially for the shorter stays. Not to be confused with 'Aparthotels' which are usually a group of apartments with hotel type facilities.

Don't dismiss this as a form of holiday 'accommodation'. Camping in the Algarve is nothing like camping back in the U.K, its something to do with the weather I think. Plenty of places to be found in the Algarve, all with first class facilities. Most have tents, caravans and even bungalows to rent. The most economical way of visiting the Algarve.
